Thrustmaster T818: first impressions
This first look at the Thrustmaster T818 accompanies my move to the brand’s direct-drive base. I keep my existing wheels, including the SF1000, and fit the base to my SIM-LAB GT1 Evo. My initial tests mainly seek immersion and confidence at the wheel. This January 2023 review describes early use, before the later long-term follow-up.
Adapting older wheels and mounting the base
The box contains the base, power supply, USB cable and an adapter for older Thrustmaster wheels. I bought a second adapter for my two wheels, allowing changes without transferring the adapter each time. Locking involves opening the lever, inserting the wheel and closing the mechanism.
The cockpit bracket is an additional purchase. With it, my GT1 Evo accepts the base without new holes. I also correct the mounting orientation after checking the manual. I learn that the desk bracket can serve on a suitable cockpit too, an option I wish I had known before choosing my accessory.
First laps in iRacing
I begin in Performance mode with a 33 cm Ferrari 488 Challenge round rim. Dirt requires frequent corrections and immediately gives me a good impression of response. The base is quiet, although the connection to older wheels can creak slightly.
I then move to the Mazda, which I know from several other bases. I receive precise information and enough confidence to correct my line after braking too late. I am seeking presence and control here, without claiming a demonstrated lap-time gain.
The SF1000 and other simulations
The SF1000 remains my favourite among the wheels tested, particularly for longer sessions and its displays. Paired with the T818 in ACC, it makes road effects especially enjoyable. I also like the result in rFactor 2. F1 22 requires adaptation with the specific settings used for this test.
I retain a simple approach: generally Performance mode, damping at zero, then adjustments inside each game. The lack of a profile manager does not bother me at this stage.
What we liked
- Perceived precision and quiet operation.
- Enjoyable driving with the SF1000 in ACC.
- The ability to retain my Thrustmaster wheels.
What we liked less
- Minor creaking at the connection to older wheels.
- Additional purchases for the bracket and second adapter.
