My sim rig / 12 March 2023
Setup tour — March 2023
This March 2023 tour shows how I adapt my simracing cockpit to Star Citizen. I retain the rig, screens and pedals, then add the controls and supports needed for spaceflight. The flying sequences also explain my learning process and preferences between several ships in the version of the game used at that time.
A cockpit switching from cars to spacecraft
My installation combines two joysticks with Fanatec V3 Inverted pedals, which I use for throttle and the space brake. GameGlass on an iPad supplements physical controls with a touchscreen interface. The aim is to rely less on the keyboard and mouse while seated in the cockpit.
I modelled 3D-printed parts to use the T818 as an iPad support and switch quickly between configurations. This lets me restore controls suited to ground vehicles or spacecraft. For the joysticks, I reuse parts from my SIM-LAB’s integrated triple-screen mount to create articulated arms. The project therefore adapts the existing cockpit as my needs develop.
Learning in Arena Commander
After several weeks exploring Star Citizen, I find Arena Commander useful for configuring controls and learning to move the ship in three dimensions without the same pressure as a mission. My FPV drone experience provides a starting point: I arrange the joysticks in a way resembling my radio controller.
The training race map then provides practice with the Avenger Titan. Gameplay shows this discovery and adjustment phase rather than a benchmark lap demonstration.
Avenger Titan and initial missions
I present the Titan as a versatile ship because of its cargo capacity and armament. In this video’s context, it is my suggested starting choice. I also discuss the compromise between a ballistic weapon and replacing it with a repeater: avoiding ammunition reloads does not remove firing constraints, and accuracy remains necessary.
Training and Pirate Swarm sequences accompany these explanations. Prices and equipment discussed in the video belong to March 2023; the article recounts that experience.
Bounty hunting with the Super Hornet and Sabre
For the MRT contracts shown next, I prefer the F7C-M Super Hornet and its combination of laser and ballistic weapons. I tried a Heartseeker version, then returned to the Super Hornet. I mainly want short engagements to destroy the target and move to the next contract, while acknowledging the substantial budget represented by this ship.
The final section moves to the Aegis Sabre. In the fights presented, I find engagements longer and more demanding of accuracy, making them less enjoyable for my use than the Super Hornet. This explains my gaming preferences at the time while showing the hybrid cockpit in action.
